Archibald de Bear, 1st edition, Edinburgh: William Blackwood, 1898, letterpress diagrams, 4pp. advertisements at rear, some spotting, mainly to endpapers and edges, upper hinge split, original pictorial grey cloth, somewhat soiled, and cloth lifting slightly in a couple of places, small 8vo A scarce early book on football, in better condition than it is usually seen. Renowned footballer John Goodall (1863-1942) rose to fame as a centre-forward for England and became Watford's first manager in 1903. He also played cricket in the County Championship for Derbyshire in 1895 and 1896, being one of nineteen players to achieve the Derbyshire Double of playing cricket for Derbyshire and football for Derby County. A pair of Chinese blue and white 'boys at play' bowls, late Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) Each of circular form, rising from a high footring with scalloped rim, the exterior sides of each painted with boys playing in naturalistic landscapes and further detailed with lotus flowerheads, the incised interior well, with trellis work rim border, 9.5cm high, 20.5cm diam, Chenghua (1465-1487) character marks to base. (2) CONDITION REPORT: Lot 30: First bowl - three hairline cracks with association chips, small chips to the upper rim. Second bowl - three vertical hairline cracks with associated chips, small areas of staining to the bowl, scuffing and wear to underside of footrim.

CONDITION REPORT: Lot 80: Extensive fritting to interior, free from chips, cracks, restoration.
