Kotek´, four pages, 8vo, Davos-Platz, Kurhaus, 2nd December 1884, to an unidentified professor, in German. On a boldly and cleanly written letter, Kotek commences referring to a musical arrangement he has been working on, and states in part `It took me very long until I finished the arrangement for your lovely serenade, and I beg you not be angry with me for this delay! As you know I have been very sick lately and even now I am not allowed to sit too long before my desk! I have done this arrangement work only for pleasure, and I agreed with Hugo Boeck that if you will consider it insufficient it can be thrown to the dustbin. Therefore, play it, or read it, and if you do not like it, please do not worry for me, I already found reward on working on it´ Kotek further refers to Piotr Illich Tchaikovsky, saying `Before yesterday Tschaikowsky left, he was so good to visit me and to spend eight days here. I played with him the serenade and I was happy to find that he liked it very much, especially the first three movements´ Kotek further refers to the Berlin music and its concert clubs and asks his correspondent to send his best regards to professors Joachim and Spitta. Letters of Kotek are rare as a result of his early death of tuberculosis at the age of 29. VG Piotr Illich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) Russian Composer. T.L.S., James M Cain, one page, 4to, Hyatsville, Maryland, 10th February 1963, to Mrs. E. J. Connor of Who's Who in America. Cain writes, in part, 'Reading the monumental life of Jefferson by Nathan Schachner I opened Who's Who in America to see who he was, and didn't find him. This is just a note to suggest his inclusion, as it is a profoundly scholarly work, by itself a qualification, I would think, whether he's done anything else or not…..With my latest corrected proofs I sent two other suggestions on, Paul Hume of the Washington Post & Times Herald, their music critic, and Lois Long, the New Yorker's fashion writer……whether the note reached your desk I don't know. Hence this brief recap. Getting one more half line of your father's agate type was the hardest chore of my life, and now that he's gone, doesn't get any easier. But I never fail to think of him when I fill out one of your forms. The two editions since his passing have been up to standard, to my eye, particularly the last, which is better proof-read than the other…..The selections are really encyclopedic, and do you enormous credit'. Accompanied by the original envelope. Some very light, extremely minor creasing, VG
