Caldwell & Co. Inc. New York' and three 20th century Chinese cinnabar lacquer boxes and covers, the largest 19cm long (9)Dreweatts have applied for a de minimis for this this lot ref: D2F39BZ9Provenance: Property of Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) Skyring House, Worthing, and thence by descent Harry Taft Hayward (1868 - 1930) - cousin to William Howard Taft, 27th president of the United States - and Edith Wires (1872 - 1962) were members of the Boston elite. Their two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Hayward (1906-1976) and Harriet Taft Hayward (1907-1968), lived at Oakwald, Franklin, Massachusetts and were both painted by the artist Sir John Lavery (1856 - 1941); see Christie's, The Scottish Sale at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, 6975, 28th October 2004, Lot 152. Berlin KPM porcelain ink or desk standwith one accompanying inkwell, decorated with various birds amongst leaves and gilt painted detail, eagle and sceptre mark to the edge of the stand, 29cm x 4cm high and eagle and sceptre mark to the base of the inkwell, 7cm high (2) The inkwell lid is chipped. Gilt decoation is worn throughout to both. Signs of wear and use with some scratches evident.
Leather desk or stationery boxwith gilded and embossed decoration, showing the arms of a Duke to the front and silk lined interior, 30.5cm wide x 22cm high x 15cm deep With signs of age, wear and use. Some tears to the silk lining. Stains and wear to the exterior. Doors slightly loose and hang slightly.
