DOS PASSOS JOHN: (1896-1970) American novelist, remembered for his U.S.A. trilogy. A.L.S., John Dos Passos, one page, 4to, Baltimore, Maryland, 6th March 1967, to Dr. William L. Straus Jr. at the Department of Anatomy, John Hopkins University Medical School. Dos Passos thanks his correspondent for two papers, remarking 'I'll read them with interest and instruction as soon as I work through a pile of stuff on my desk' and further suggesting that they might get to see each other again, before Straus leaves for a tour, adding 'It was great fun the other night'. LEESE OLIVER: (1894-1978) British Lieutenant-General who commanded the XXX Corps in North Africa and Sicily, serving under General B. L. Montgomery, before going on to command the Eighth Army in the Italian Campaign throughout most of 1944. Vintage signed 6.5 x 4.5 photograph of Leese seated in a half-length pose, wearing his uniform, at his desk and with a pen in one hand. Signed ('Oliver Leese, Lt. General') in blue ink to a light area of the background. HARRIS ARTHUR T.: (1892-1984) British Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief of RAF Bomber Command during World War II. Signed Christmas greetings card, the 8vo folding card featuring a signed colour 4.5 x 6.5 photograph of Harris seated in a half-length pose, in uniform, at his desk, neatly affixed to the front. Signed (‘Arthur T. Harris’) in blue ink, in later years, with his name alone to a light area of the image. Also signed by Harris in blue ink to the inside beneath a printed Christmas and New Year greeting. One small, light scuff to the upper left corner of the image. About VG

An excellent vintage signed and inscribed sepia 10.5 x 9 photograph of Roosevelt seated in a half-length profile pose at his desk, holding a pen in one hand as he prepares to sign the papers before him. Photograph by Harris & Ewing of Washington DC and bearing their blindstamp to the lower left corner. Signed by Roosevelt in dark fountain pen ink to the lower border, 'For Dr. Frank Hood Shultz from Franklin D Roosevelt'. Lightly hinged at the upper two corners to a cream mat and measuring 14 x 11 overall. VGDr. Frank Hood Shultz (1873-1955) American dentist who resided in Washington DC.

LAKSHMI PANDIT VIJAYA: (1900-1990) Indian diplomat and politician, the first woman to be appointed President of the United Nations General Assembly (1953-54). Sister of Jawaharlal Nehru and aunt of Indira Gandhi. Vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Lakshmi Pandit seated in a half-length pose at her desk, with a pencil and papers before her. Signed ('Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit') in turquoise fountain pen ink to a clear area at the base of the image and dated June 1949 in her hand. Some light overall surface and corner creasing, G Lakshmi Pandit served as Ambassador of India to the Soviet Union 1947-49 and as Indian Ambassador to the United States 1949-52.

Vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Douglas, in costume as Brice Chamberlain, seated in a half-length pose at his desk, writing a letter, in a scene from Elia Kazan's American Western film The Sea of Grass (1947) in which Douglas starred alongside Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. Signed by Douglas in blue fountain pen ink across a largely clear area of the image.
