A GEORGE III MAHOGANY KNEEHOLE DESK IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS CHIPPENDALE, CIRCA 1780 82cm high, 103cm wide, 58cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips. Leather surface to the interior slide of the upper drawer is likely and old replacement. I has the expected wear and marks. Some old repairs to mouldings. Handles are likely Edwardian replacements but suit the piece well. A key present but only operated the lock to the door. Some old veneer repairs, including a larger repair to the area around the escutcheon of the upper drawer. Strip of later tape across backboards. Later supporting blocks to the backs of feet and underside of chest.Colour variation to the surface and patina with some fading in areas (particularly to the top). There are areas that have a more cleaned/polished look, while in other areas the polish appears to have 'bloomed' and these have a dryer/rougher appearance. It appears to be the original surface. A GEORGE IV MAHOGANY WRITING OR LIBRARY TABLECIRCA 1825 The rounded rectangular black leather lined top above three frieze drawers on one side, on reeded tapering legs with brass caps and castors76cm high, 140.5cm wide, 83cm deep Condition Report: One drawer with false stamp 'GILLOWS. LANCASTER' There are scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use. The table is 76cm high, 140cm wide, 82.5cm deep There are losses, observations and restorations including: the drawer handles possibly later; the underside of the top with a reddish stain; the drawer stays and surrounds with a matt ochre wash concealing the timber which could possibly have been replaced, the curious positioning of a stamp 'FILE COPY' perhaps from when the desk was used in a office?; the feet slightly unpolished and a little rough with the gilding worn to the caster cappings; there is some evidence of worm. Old chips, splits and losses - see images. Leather with the expected wear, cracking, tears, bubbling, marks and old repairs - see images. Various old significant repairs throughout - see images for details. Filler used in places. Tambour top rolls back and forth easily. The hands to the tambour top have moved position slightly and there are old repairs where they previously sat. Lever mechanism which raises and lowers the interior pigeonhole and drawer element operates smoothly. A small later screw has been used to stop the lever rotating too far. No key present, all locks are open. The painted trailing bellflowers to the back legs and the frieze above them are later. Some areas of fading. A MAHOGANY PEDESTAL DESKCIRCA 1835 AND LATER With tooled leather inset top, open bookshelves to the pedestals, the pedestal backs panelled, with frieze drawers to one side, opposing a fall front frieze drawer flanked by false drawer fronts86cm high, 243cm wide, 136cm deep Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use.Some old chips, splits and losses.Some old repairs and replacements.The leather top with the expected marks, knocks, fading and discolouration. Some short tears and noticeable dark scratches. Line of underlying construction is visible to some areas of the leather.This desk has been constructed of elements of varying dates from circa 1835 and later.The overall design and scale is likely the result of an entire reconstruction.Repolished and revarnished overall.Some elements that look to be 19th century period, may be of later date, including carved elements.Various marks to the interiors of drawers, and underlying structure indicating reuse of elementsNo alternate holes to handles to the drawers that operate. One handle detached but present.Some screws to hinges missing, and others are replacedOne lined long drawer operates, lock is open, no key present. The opposing long drawer front is hinged and opens to reveal a folio shelf. There is no catch or lock to engage this and it remains open. The short drawers on the shorter ends all open and operate, no keys present.
