FINE LATE 19TH CENTURY MAHOGANY CARLTON HOUSE DESK BY HOWARD & SONS, LONDON, satinwood banded with ebony and boxwood stringing, the back with pierced gilt metal gallery above an arrangement of six small drawers and three cupboard compartments, green tooled leather inset top with a rising slope flanked by two small drawers over three frieze drawers and raised upon square tapering legs with brass terminals and castors united by a galleried undertier, each drawer bearing a lockplate stamped 'Cope & Collinson', bears maker's label and stamped 180087668 to the top right drawers, 49" wide, 26" approx deep. A Lloyd's War Medal for Bravery at Sea, posthumously awarded to Chief Radio Officer Sidney Kenneth Jones, S.S. 'Turakina', 20th August 1940. In the announcement of the award it is stated that after orders to abandon ship had been given Chief Radio Officer Jones remained on board to send out distress messages until he was blown from his desk through a wooden bulkhead. The action took place in 1940, when the S.S. 'Turakina' was sailing from New Zealand to the United Kingdom, (cased).
