GARDNER ERLE STANLEY: (1889-1970) American Author of detective stories, creator of Perry Mason. T.L.S., Erle Stanley Gardner, one page, 4to, Rancho Del Paisano, Temecula, California, 4th September 1953, to John Howarth. Gardner thanks his correspondent for their complimentary comments, adding `It`s always a pleasure to hear from a reader in a foreign country`. He continues to state that he would be honoured to have his photograph among the illustrious names Howarth mentions, `and am enclosing herewith a recent picture taken of me in my study showing some of the souvenirs I have collected in my adventures around the world.` Together with the signed photograph referred to, a 6.5 x 5 photograph of Gardner seated behind his desk, the surrounding walls covered in Wild West souvenirs. Signed in blue fountain pen ink with his name alone, largely across a darker area. Also included is an oblong 8vo custom printed autograph card, signed in bold dark fountain pen ink by Gardner and with a typed inscription to John Howarth, dated 11th July 1949. VG to EX, 3
WHITTLE FRANK: (1907-1996) English Royal Air Force Officer, inventor of the jet engine. Signed 7 x 5 photograph depicting Whittle, in later years, seated in a half length pose at his desk. Signed to a light area at the base of the image and dated 5th August 1982 in his hand. The signature is somewhat weak although perfectly legible. VG
