It was widely employed for decoration by royalty as well as commoners. This particular piece would have been for a scholar’s desk and is beautifully aged.

Thomas Hudson (the 'Cowman') of Odell, Bedfordshire - a large and magnificent solid English oak and elm pedestal desk of highly imposing stature: the grey leather inset cleated top with straight sides and concave ends above panelled sides with chamfered muntins; the front of the desk with carved inscription to the top 'Made for F.W. Timms of Banbury in 1973', with knee space centering and each side with four further graduated drawers with mahogany lining, dust beading and brass swan-neck handles; the front left-hand side carved with the Cowman signature-motif and the back panel inscribed to the upper and lower friezes with the John Ruskin quotation, 'When we build, let us think that we build forever'; the three-panel back well-tooled and carved, the left-hand section depicting cows before a cow shed, the middle section a brick-layer with brick and trowel in hand and the right-hand side similarly carved with flowerheads and tendrils before a tree to the right and a stone bridge; the whole piece raised on stile feet.
