An unusual Victorian silver horse measuring tape by James Chesterman & Co., Sheffield 1885, with hands to one side and inches to the other, engraved Venetia, 11cm (4 1/4in) diameter; a desk notepad holder by W. & G. Neal, London 1900, on a shield shape base, engraved Venetia 1900, 11cm (4 1/4in) long; and a desk shoe buffer and base, engraved Venetia, 18.5cm (7 1/4in) long Provenance: Mary Venetia James (1861-1948) was a London society hostess and racehorse breeder. She was born into the Cavendish-Bentinck family and were related to the Dukes of Portland; she was also a relative and godmother of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who later became Queen Consort to George V (The Queen Mother). In 1885 she married the racehorse owner and breeder Arthur James in the Chapel Royal. Venetia and her husband resided at Grafton Street, London, and bred horses at Coton House. Venetia and Arthur James were both friends of King Edward VII and Venetia was reputed to be his mistress.
