GILLOWS, LANCASTER A MID 19TH CENTURY OAK GOTHIC REVIVAL DESK DESIGNED BY A. W. N. PUGIN the leathered top above linen fold panelled sides and back fronting two banks of four graduating drawers and a long central drawer, chamfered corners and carved rosette motifs to the tops; fitted with original ironwork handles and escutcheons. The top drawer stamped Gillows Lancaster 163cm wide 84cm deep 75cm high Kneehole 58.5cm high. Note: A desk to this design was made for the Prime Minister's office in the New Palace of Westminster, London, designed by Pugin and Barry, and decorated by Pugin circa 1844. The handles and lock plates, also to Pugin's designs, were probably made by Hardman & Co. The Prime Minster's office is illustrated in Paul Atterbury & Clive Wainwright, Pugin a Gothic Passion, 1994 p.233, fig.439.
A FINE LARGE MID 20TH CENTURY FRENCH ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY DESK the black tooled leathered top with brass moulded edge above a generous kneehole and long frieze drawer flanked by two banks of three graduated drawers fitted with superb lions head and swag gilt brass handles. The sides and back panelled with brass moulded decoration within ribbon and reeded corners; standing on brass mounted square tapering legs 182cm wide 79cm high 88cm deep.
A LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH GILT ORMOLU EMPIRE STYLE DESK CLOCK with a winged angel standing on a triangular plinth base with lions paw feet, holding a circular clock movement, having leaf work decoration and engine turned gilt dial with Roman numerals and spade-shaped hands. Fronting an 8-day spring driven movement with jewelled platform escapement – the dust cover stamped with retailers mark G.B. Boin Taburet a’ Paris. Boin-Taburet was established in 1873 by the antique dealer George Boin and the jeweller Emile Taburet. The firm was credited with the revival of interest in Louis XV style silver-work in Paris in the late 1880's and awarded a gold medal at the Paris 1889 Exposition Universelle. As well as producing exceptional silver and metal work 24cm high.
