Wooden Document Storage Trunk Liberated from Adolf Hitlers Office in the Reich Chancellery by Lieutenant Colonel M E Hancock MC, Welfare Officer in Berlin 1945, a large wooden panelled trunk with screwed metal corner sections and steel heavy duty handles. The trunk is stamped in multiple places “Kanzlei des Fuhrer der N.S.D.A.P”. Trunk with tension strap to the interior. Front of the trunk with keyhole but the locking system appears to have been removed, possibly broken open by Russian or British forces for intelligence reasons when found in the Reich Chancellery. Box dimensions 80 x 46 x 36 ½ cms. Some evidence of worm but this has been treated. Accompanying the trunk is a photocopied full diary of Lieutenant Colonel Hancock MC from his time in Berlin, 1945, he makes the following reference, “During the afternoon I went off to the Chancellery. What a place it must have been! Hitler’s famous desk, a massive granite affair some twelve feet long and nine inches thick, was overturned and smashed to bits. The destruction in the Chcncellery and in the Reichstag was most thorough and must have taken a long time. I managed to find a number of medals and medal ribbons which I want to identify, though I doubt if any are of particular value except as an interesting relic in the future. Also brought away a very useful wooden box, not only as a memento but as a very badly wanted piece of luggage for the return journey.” Lieutenant Colonel M E Hancock MC, served during WW1 with the 1/4th Northamptonshire regiment and was awarded the Military Cross for his service at Gallipoli, in which he was wounded. He later served with the Grenadier Guards and in WW2 was part of the famous “The Coats Mission”, which was the protection service of the British Royal Family and Prime Minister if England was invaded by the German forces. He later became part of the Welfare Office in Berlin, being responsible for the famous “Winston Club” and can be seen standing behind Winston Churchill when he opened the club in 1945. An account of Lieutenant Colonel Hancock’s time in Berlin is recorded at the Imperial War Museum, London. This trunk has come directly from the family of Lieutenant Colonel Hancock and it was always referred to in the family as “Hitler’s Trunk” as Hancock stated he found this item in Hitler’s office. Copies of photographs of Hancock can be seen in this listing.
