An attractive Regency period rosewood brass inlaid Chiffonier / Writing Desk, the top with brass Greek key gallery over two graduating shelves with lyre type supports, over a base with frieze drop front writing drawer, and two panel doors with pierced brass grills, 150cms (59") high x 92cms (36") wide. A very fine and important early 19th Century Killarney wood arbutus and marquetry Davenport Desk, the shaped raised gallery back decorated with Irish harp, eagle and deer, over a shaped top, the leather inset framed with shamrock design opening to reveal similar decoration, with large harp, and with pigeon holes and drawers, the shaped sides further decorated with shamrock and oval panels of castle ruins, and either side with concealed candle slides, the main body with arched yew-wood panels, the blind hinged door on right opening to reveal five drawers with decorated fronts and concealed pen drawers, and with front circular pillar supports decorated with shamrocks, and similar platform base, 107cms (42") high, 71cms (28") wide. An early 19th Century North Italian Lombardy walnut and marquetry kneehole Desk, the top with an oval panel of a mother and child tending goats, further embellished with classical figures, leaf scrolls and grotesque figures over three frieze drawers with crossbanded and inlaid doors with figured decoration, brass handles on square tapering legs, approx. 129cms w x 61cms d (59" x 24"). (James Warren Doyle, Bishop of Kildare & Leighlin)" standing by a desk with red drapes behind, holding a volume of his printed "Letters" and displaying a bunch of gold seals, approx. 152cms x 122cms (60" x 48"), in contemporary gilt frame. A late 19thC mahogany open Davenport desk, with a brass galleried top with space for ink bottles and pens, stencilled single leather writing section and hinged lid revealing two drawers and open well, above a double arrangement of baluster columns broken by an inverted second and similar undertier raised on compressed bun feet, 95cm high, 54cm wide, 44cm deep.

Autograph letter signed, 'Jacob Bell', no date, to Sir Thomas, hoping that Sir Thomas might answer a correspondent for him for his next number [of the Pharmaceutical Journal], 'My plan is to give a condensed reply as brief as it can be without being useless', 2 pp. with a further two full-page pen and ink drawings by Bell, the first showing him 'A few days before going to press' behind over-piled desk, the second relaxing at a clear desk 'The day after publication', 8vo Jacob Bell was one of the founders of the Pharmaceutical Society and editor of the Pharmaceutical Journal. He also moved in wide artistic circles and acted as patron, adviser and friend to a network of artists. (1)
