A gold and bloodstone double-ended desk seal,19th century,modelled as a gauntlet-clad hand clasping a desk seal, set with a monogrammed agate tablet, overall engraved with scrolling foliage, the faceted tapering cylindrical bloodstone sleeve with a foliate mount, the lower bloodstone matrix engraved with a coat of arms,10.5 cm long The arms are those of the Viscounts Falkland. This Scottish title was created on 10th November 1620 for Sir Henry Cary, KB. The initials 'LC' on the upper matrix are probably for Lucius Cary, 10th Viscount Falkland, P.C., G.C.H. a representative Peer for Scotland in 1831-32. He was born on 5th November 1803 and was only six years old when he succeeded to the title. His father, the 9th Viscount, was mortally wounded in a duel with one Arthur Powell on 28th February 1809, and died two days later. A gold mounted desk seal,with octagonal tapering bloodstone handle and cushion shaped pommel. Gold banded collar and reeded mount with a chased foliate border, the bloodstone matrix intaglio engraved with the arms of Lowe (as borne by the family formally based at Shrewsbury and Calne). The arms on the wife's side are those of Ross Quartering Lewin.
