James Phillips & Sons Ltd, (Union Street, Bristol) A GOOD ARTS & CRAFTS OAK DESK the superstructure having an overhanging breakfront top on twin six panelled green-glazed doors with leaded tracery and three-pronged stylised foliate, copper hinges, flanking a similarly-hinged central fall front enclosing "STONE'S PATENT" lock and interior (with lock stamp and plaque) comprising two drawers and assorted pigeonholes, on an overhanging rectangular top and a central kneehole between twin pull-out bookrests and sets of three graduated drawers (one having two maker's name plaques to the lining), the handle backplates matching the aforementioned hinges, between open quadrants, on square section legs with spreading feet, 129.5cm x 53cm x 119cm high, (51in x 21in x 46.8in) *** The "Stone's Patent" referred to would appear to be the mechanism which requires the fall front writing slope to be unlocked and opened for the graduated drawers to unlock.

A Victorian partner's oak pedestal desk, the moulded rectangular green leather-lined top above three short drawers to the frieze, decorated with blind fret carved lion masks and scrolls, the sides carved with the date 1877 flanking the initials N.G., with four short drawers to each pedestal similarly decorated, the obverse similarly fitted, one drawer stamped DEK, possibly the initials of Daphne Keith, 72in. x 42in. x 28.5in. high, possibly made for George Nathaniel Clayton in 1877 by Thomas Robertson of Narrowgate, Alnwick.
