An 18th century walnut veneered kneehole desk, with crossbanded top with reentrant corners above a series of frieze drawers and centre recessed cupboard, all raised on bracket feet. Width 76 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We do not think that this desk has been re-veneered. It does however require extensive restoration. The top is flat but does have a large number of stress fractures to the veneer and one wider crack running across the whole of the top. There are also small areas of veneer missing. The moulded edge to the top is generally in good order with only minor losses. The sides of the desk both have significant cracks to the veneers. The drawer fronts have veneer losses as do the runners between the drawers. The handles are old but clearly not original. The carcass is veneered on to pine. The drawer linings are however oak. The bracket feet are in poor condition and all have woodworm. The rear left hand foot is detached and in pieces. The backboards appear to be original and also have some woodworm. The lock is missing to the top drawer.

The veneer to the top of the stationery compartment, the surround and the desk slope front is a little dry with minor losses but no significant issues. The top is not warped. The leather writing surface is stained and scuffed. The rear panel is in generally good order with minor surface scratches. The frieze is a little dry with some minor veneer losses to the rear left hand corner but no significant problems. The drawers are all present and correct and appear to be operating as they should. They again are a little dry but there are no significant losses. The dummy drawers are similarly in good condition. The front panel is in good order. The corbel supports have lost some of their original ebonised finish particularly the left and bottom support which has a veneer loss at the top. The base is a little scuffed around the edges as one would expect. The castors are original. The interior of the piece is very clean. We can see no evidence of any woodworm.

The right hand three drawers are in generally good order with only very minor losses to the fretwork. The left hand three drawers are in similarly good condition however the bottom left hand drawer has a more substantial fretwork loss in the bottom left hand corner. The centre drawer has losses to the applied moulding on the rectangular panel however the fretwork to left and right is in reasonable order. There are minor losses to the carved kneehole mouldings.
