A COPY OF A LETTER FROM THE DESK OF MAJOR B.E. FERGUSON OF THE BLACK WATCH GENERAL HEADQUARTERS INDIA, regarding the strange story of Lieutenant Philip Stibbe who was shot and wounded and left behind on expedition in Rangoon to wait for the Japs or d eath or from the single Karen Riflemen who disobeyed orders and stayed behind with him, the story continues that long afterwards news filtered through that the brave Karen had been shot and that the Officer was last seen desperately ill in a Japanese Prisoner of War Hospital, the letter is written to Lieutenant Stibbe`s father describing his son`s bravery and what a sad loss and how disheartening it was personally for the Major, however what he did not know is that Philip Stibbe had recovered, r eturned to England and was living in Leicester and that the brave rifleman who was known as Maung Tun was alive and well and living off his own patch of land in his native valley, this made the monocle wearing dandy Brigadier Ferguson, one of the bes t D.S.O.`s of the Burma Campaign the embarrassed idol of the Karen Mission, included in the four page letter is a newspaper cutting describing in full, his faux pas together with a 1939 dated LETTER OF CONSCIENTIOUS OBJECTION
A lot of silver to include; four napkin rings, all having Birmingham hallmarks, square tapered desk ink well with worn inscription to lid, having worn Birmingham hallmark, two silver ash trays with central set farthing coins with inscription `From the Cricketer`s Arms 1943`, both having Birmingham hallmark, a vesta case with overall ornate design with shield cartouche, hallmarked Birmingham 1899, together with a silver plated napkin ring. An Arts and Crafts oak desk with pierced stylised floral decorated back flanked by pair of copper set cupboard doors above single frieze drawer raised on splayed square tapering supports united by an undertier, width 100cm. CONDITION REPORT: Solid construction, slight scuffs and scratches to the edges as expected, generally in sound condition.
