A c. 1920`s mahogany twin pedestal desk, the serpentine top with gadrooned rims and the central drawer flanked by two cupboard doors revealing sliding trays, the canted corners with carved lion masks and foliate mouldings and raised on shaped bracket supports with further foliate moulding (152 cms wide).

Essex indenture on a single leaf of vellum dated March 17th 1687/8 being an assignment of a mortgage between John Mair alias Meeres of St Martins in the Fields Middx and his wife Jane to Benjamin White of London for a number of properties in Lowlayton (ie Leyton) Essex. Written in English in a neat secretarial hand with three red wax seals attached to original vellum tongues. The document is a little dusty but otherwise unblemished and features a curious but very attractive initial portrait of a scrivener writing the document at his desk.

Two framed and glazed groups for brothers Lieutenants Ralph and Edmund Davison, both with a Dead Man’s Penny, Service and Victory Medals, both service medals tarnished, the first group with an additional 1914 Star and Ralph Davison’s name and regiment stamped to reverse, both sets framed and glazed with printed message from The King in envelope at rear and each with a desk support, both somewhat rubbed, approx. 27 x 18cm, together with a framed and glazed scroll commemorating Lieutenant Edmund Davison of the Royal Sussex Regiment, his name and regiment supplied in a calligraphic hand, framed and glazed. Lieutenant Ralph Davison, 3rd Bn. attending 1st Bn., Northamptonshire Regiment, died 9th May 1915, Le Touret Memorial; 2nd Lieutenant Edmund Davison, 3rd Bn. attending 11th Bn., Royal Sussex Regiment, died 24th September 1917, Tyne Cot Memorial. The Times (9th October 1917) notes the death of Edmund Davison, ‘Dearly loved youngest son of Mrs Davison, Gordon Square, WC1, aged 20 years’. (3)

A Louis Philippe gilt and patinated bronze and marmo Siena mounted desk set, circa 1835, comprising an ink stand with urn shaped well with hinged lid on a rectangular base, 11.5cm high; a pair of candlesticks en suite, 15cm high; and a letter clip; all with engine milled decoration and Vitruvian scroll banding Condition Report:** Good condition, with just the usual very minor knocks overall, consistent with age and use. One candlestick is loose and will need tightening up. Gilt surfaces are dark and very minorly tarnished.

Some old closed splits, some sections of replacement and losses to veneers, minor chips. Overall varnished surface appears `bloomed` affecting colour and patina of timber. Some additional marks to top. Some old closed spltis, sections of replacements and losses to veneers. Locks replaced. Feet possibly replaced. Minor evidence of old worm and some stain visble to the rear.

Top and central drawer later adaptions. Overall desk appears to be of late 19th/early 20th century date in George III style and not as described in the catalogue.

Small sections of losses to veneers, to top. Generally fair condition, tidy overall. Leather overall in good condition. Tape to underside of drawer linings.

Losses to brass marquetry and fluting to the legs. Leather requires replacement. Timber generally in good condition, some blooming to varnish. There is a gilt metal mount missing from the top of the leg. Some loose sections of brass stringing are present inside the desk.

Old closed splits. Some sections of moulding losses to veneers. Handles replaced and escutcheons. Locks replaced. Minor chips. Some locks vary in size and maker. Evidence in terms of holes and gaps throughout where previous handles, locks, escutcheons have been present. Top right drawer is warped to interior making it difficult to open. Fading to colour overall. Leather worn, with some tears, losses and marks. Three handle loops detached but present. All drawer linings are oak except: one short drawer bears replaced floor to drawer lining, with stained pine rather than oak, and untidy. Lacking shelves to interior of cupboards
