Wood dry with several splits, insert top worn. General knocks and bumps with some losses to veneer. Each lock stamped with V R crown monogram but no key present.

An Extremely Fine Quality Middle Eastern Late 19th Century Metamorphic Table/Writing Desk, Probably Syrian profusely inlaid with exotic woods to geometric design with ivory inlays and beadings throughout the top and sides are picked out in ivory cartouche with Arabic. Script reads ``La illaha illallah`` which translates to ``There is only one God`` Below the top one large draw with an ivory knob supported by square tapering legs on a stretcher base, all highly decorated. The top opens up by means of two flaps lifted up by ivory knobs to reveal a writing compartment, fitted with a letter rack and draws terminating in a row of ivory balustrades of typical form with aperture for ink well. The writing surface is green beige, the side flaps once again are profusely inlaid to a high quality. All hinges and brackets are gilded brass, the feet also. Size of top 21 x 23 inches, height 29 inches.
