George V Gold Sovereign, 1912.Discovered amongst the remains of an unknown WWI British soldier of the York and Lancaster regiment. In April 2006 a set of remains was found in the local Mayor's garden at the site of the former Chateau de Flandres, Beaucamps-Ligny, (The Mayor was having excavation works carried out for installing drainage on his land). Regimental insignia found with the remains confirmed that they were those of a York and Lancaster soldier. The apparently deliberate burial, which included the sovereign, papers (reduced to dust), a fountain pen and cap badge, led to speculation that the grave could have been that of an officer involved in the ill-fated 18th October 1914 advance as detailed below. The York and Lancaster Regiment 2nd Battalion arrived in France in August 1914 and by October were serving in the vicinity of Neuve Chapelle, on 18th October they were tasked to capture 'Radinghem' and beyond it to the Chateau de Flandres, in an effort to secure the chateau they came under heavy rifle and machine gun fire, casualties ensued and were buried in the plateau.Regrettably, there was no evidence to positively identify this soldier, so he was buried as an unknown British soldier from the York and Lancaster Regiment in the nearest Commonwealth War Graves cemetery, Rue David Military Cemetery, Fleuerbaix on the 5th October 2006.The Gold Sovereign was handed over as property of the regiment at the reburial service, it remained in a desk drawer at the regiment for a number of years. The vendor has advised that they will be making a donation of 10% of the sold hammer price split between the Western Front Association and the Royal British Legion.Accompanied by supporting documentation.
