A Steam Punk inspired desk lamp, created from an early 20th century electrical transmitter/gauge, with adjustable brass reading lamp. Height 54 cm. CONDITION REPORT: This item is of very recent construction, straight from the manufacturer (these items and similar items in the sale are produced by a local gentleman as a hobby). The lamp is in good working order and currently illuminated in the saleroom. There are vacant holes in the top of the item where it has been adapted into a lamp but it is all part of the manufacturing process.
An Art nouveau brass desk calendar, late 19th century, with leaf and berry decoration and fabric scrolls for the day, date and month, the rear support emanating in an acanthus leaf, height 20 cm, width 11 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Overall this appears to be in good structural condition. The colour of the metalwork is consistent throughout and commensurate with its age. There is a winding knob missing to the middle of the left hand side which operates the date. The canvas backed paper scrolls all appear to be in good order but the background has slightly discoloured through age.
A George III architects desk, panelled all round, with kneehole and secretaire top drawer opening to a writing slope and "alphabet" lidded compartments. Width 132 cm, height 99 cm, depth 66 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: Very good original condition. The top is flat with no warping. There is no significant staining. There are some minor old scratches and marks but no real issues. There are a few very minor stress fractures which in our opinion are insignificant. The secretaire drawer opens and operates as it should. All interior compartments are present and have their original hinges. All locks to the small drawers are present. Whilst we feel that the handles are original in that there are no other handle holes, some of the handles have clearly become loose and cylindrical sections of timber have been positioned to allow the handles to screw in and tighten. The cockbeading is present to all drawer fronts. To the right of the secretaire drawer there are two old repairs. The inside edge of the kneehole has a full height old stress fracture. There are also several triangular veneer repairs around the bottom edge moulding. Both the right and left hand sides are in generally good condition but do have old minor stress fractures to the timber. The three bottom panels to the rear of the cabinet have old stress fractures. The piece is structurally very solid and we can see no evidence of any woodworm.
A George III mahogany kneehole desk, fitted with a slide, frieze drawer, three further shallow drawers and recessed cupboard, all with brass handles and raised on ogee moulded bracket feet, width 95 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The desk top is good with nice patination. There are numerous old ring marks, old scratches and stress fractures to the veneers but no real issues. The crossbanded edge has a jagged stress fracture across the top of the canted angle which also runs down the right hand return for approx 8 cm. The backboards are original. The right hand side has two stress fractures, one running from the centre of the side 80% of the way to the top and another running downwards for approx 7 cm. The left hand side has similar fractures. The slide is nibbled at the edges and has had a break to the front right hand corner. The drawer fronts all have evidence of a previous set of drop handles. All drawer fronts have minor nibbles to the cockbeading. The bracket feet are all original. The piece is structurally very sound.
A late Victorian oak twin pedestal desk, with green tooled leather writing surface, three frieze drawers and three further drawers to each pedestal and with castors beneath. Width 139 cm, depth 76 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The desk is in generally very good condition. The tooled leather writing surface has some wear to the gilt but is otherwise in very good order with no significant scuffs or marks. There are two old stress fractures to the left hand return and two similar ones to the right hand return. These are in our opinion unimportant. The sides of each pedestal are in good condition with no splits. All drawers have their original handles. There has been a break to drawers three and four at the left hand pedestal and a similar break to drawer four on the right hand pedestal. You can see the fracture line across the base of the drawers. The plinth is in generally good condition with minor scuffs and knocks as one would expect. The rear panels are in good condition. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
An Edwardian inlaid mahogany desk, with rear upstand, tooled leather writing surface and two frieze drawers and all raised on tapered legs of square section terminating in castors. Width 92 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The desk is in good structural order. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. The rear upstand is in good order with only very minor marks and very slight perishing to the mirror. The tooled leather writing surface is serviceable but does have some old stress fractures to the leather and numerous small marks and scuffs. The desk top is flat with no warping and no losses to the inlay. Both drawers operate as they should. All legs are in good order with no repairs. The castors are original.
A George III mahogany kneehole desk, with applied moulded edge above a series of drawers and recessed cupboard and raised on bracket feet. Width 88 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The handles do have age but are not original. If you look at the top two short drawers you will note that space has been made for access to the lock. On the second short drawer on both sides there has been a knob handle and a hole is evident when the drawer is viewed from the rear. This does not appear on any other drawers which when viewed from the back show no other handle holes. In our opinion the original handles will probably have been attached to the front of each drawer without going right through the drawer front to the rear.
An Anglo-Indian carved hardwood Davenport desk, the superstructure carved with a battle scene and the slope front with mythical creature and figural supports, all raised on lion mask and paw front feet. Width 61 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The Davenport is in extremely good condition. It is structurally very solid with no loose joints. The superstructure is in very good order. The bottom left hand drawer handle is damaged and partially missing. The slope front is not warped. The writing leather is perished and worn. The left hand side carved edge of the flap has a 2 cm minor loss to the carving. The back panels which are all carved are in very good order with no issues. The right hand door which encloses the four short drawers is missing its original knob. The carved supports and base are all in very good order. There is no evidence of any woodworm.
