CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. Vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph, the image depicting Churchill seated in a half-length pose at his desk within the Cabinet Room of 10 Downing Street. Photograph by Walter Stoneman and bearing his credit stamp to the verso. Signed ('Winston S. Churchill') to the lower photographer's mount and dated 1950 in his hand. The signature and date are faded although still legible. Irregularly trimmed to all four edges and with two small water stains to the edges of the photographer's mount, neither of which affect the signature or date. Together with a T.L.S., Elizabeth Gilliatt, Churchill's Private Secretary, one page, 8vo, London, 14th June 1950, to Mrs. Glanville, being the original letter that accompanied Churchill's photograph, and stating, in full, 'Mr. Churchill has heard from Mr. McCorquodale that you are celebrating your 100th birthday tomorrow, and he has asked me to send you the enclosed signed photograph of himself, with his best wishes. He learns also that you are a staunch supporter of the Conservative Party, which pleases him very much. Mr. Churchill hopes you will have many more years of good health and happiness, and he thanks you for your support of the Party he has the honour to lead.' ZINOVIEV GRIGORY: (1883-1936) Bolshevik Revolutionary and Soviet Communist Politician, one of the seven members (alongside Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin and others) of the first Politburo founded in 1917 to organise the Bolshevik Revolution. Convicted and executed as part of the Great Terror in the USSR, August 1936. An extremely rare, large vintage signed and inscribed sepia 8.5 x 13.5 photograph of Zinoviev seated in a half length pose with his arm resting on a desk at his side. Photograph by Moses Nappelbaum. Signed by Zinoviev to the lower photographer's mount and inscribed in German to Otto Grimlund, with a reference to Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) and dated 13th March 1919 in his hand. Contained in the original beige matt to an overall size of 12 x 16. A signed photograph with an interesting association. Some light overall age wear and various scuffs to the image and mount, none of which significantly affect the signature, G Otto Grimlund (1893-1969) Swedish Communist Politician who was one of the main organisers of Lenin's historic 1917 trip from exile in Switzerland, through Germany and Sweden and back to Petrograd in Russia. Grimlund is known to have kept a signed photograph of Lenin (now part of an important private collection of autograph letters, manuscripts, historical documents and signed photographs) and it is more than likely that the present portrait of Zinoviev hung alongside it.

Quinziano Stoa (Giovanni Francesco) De Syllabarum quantitae epographiae sex, collation: A-B8, C6, A-Q8, R10; [22], cxxxviii ff., woodcut portrait of the author on title, decorated initials, early ink annotations, worming to first 16 leaves, affecting text, contemporary boards alla rustica, fragments of re-used manuscript or printed leaves to pastedowns, spine worn and defective, numerous wormholes to covers, 4to (200 x 155mm.), Venice, Guglielmo de Monteferrato, June 1519. ⁂ Rare early edition of this popular Latin grammar by Giovanni Francesco Conti (1484-1557), which first appeared in Pavia in 1511. The author, better known under his humanistic name, Quinziano Stoa, was a disciple of the grammarian Giovanni Britannico, and taught Rhetoric and Greek at the University of Pavia. The title-page bears a fine woodcut depicting the author writing at his desk.
