* Walpole (Hugh, 1884-1941). Small head and shoulders pencil sketch of Hugh Seymour Walpole (HSW), in profile, light grey wash background, on paper, inscribed in ink beneath ‘Drawing of me by Mr. Darwin of Dryburn, Durham, made when I was twenty-one years of age. Hugh Walpole - 1939’, a few minor marks, 18 x 12.5 cm, desk frame, glazed. Hugh Walpole spent four years as a day boy at Durham School. He would have been twenty-one in 1905, some four years before the publication of his first novel. Dryburn House is a mile or two outside Durham which was for some centuries in the possession of the Wharton family, until a daughter married Charles Waring Darwin (cousin to Charles Darwin, the naturalist). This sketch was probably executed by the son, Charles John Wharton Darwin, born 1894, and so eleven at the time of this drawing. (1)
