A Chinese porcelain apple shaped Brushwasher `pingguo zun`, Kangxi period (1662-1722), of stoutly potted globular shape with an inset rim decorated in famille verte enamels with three prancing figures within a typical rocky landscape. The `pingguo zun`, an apple shaped water jar, was a known scholars desk ornament form in China. See Stephen W. Bushell - Oriental Ceramic Art (1899) who writes "Two favorite designs, for example, of the little water-bottles intended to be used with the writer`s pallet [sic] are the p`ing-kuo tsun [pingguo zun] or apple jar, which is molded as an exact facsimile in size and shape of the fruit, and its fellow, the shih-liu tsun [shiliu zun] or pomegranate jar. I have seen these two shapes only in China."" 8cm high, 10.5cm diameter In good condition with some very slight abrasions to the rim surface where the brush was used to remove water. A Chinese Blue and White Ink or Paint Grinder, 19th century comprising a base piece with an unglazed circular section with radiating cut depressions and a small boss into which the top, which has a similar unglazed underneath, fits neatly, the top with a hole, and the base with a ring shape channel to the edge and a spout for pouring, the decoration in underglaze blue and white, the top with a typical nineteenth century composition of two ducks in a river with reeds within a stylized floral scroll border, the base with a similar border and repeating lotus, the underside unglazed with pronounced potting rings. Presumably an accoutrement for the scholar’s desk, the exact function of this piece is unclear but perhaps the ink or paint was placed between the two sections, liquid poured through the top hole and after rotating the two discs against one another a mixed ink/paint fluid poured out from the spout. It is remarkable that the handle has survived intact." Diam 14cm Excellent condition with no restoration View on auctionatrium.com
