(table)17th century Baroque style writing desk with the typical characteristics of this piece of furniture. It has the typical Baroque structure, prismatic, with a simple decoration in bone and tortoiseshell, based on marquetry, combining geometric forms inscribed in rectangles. The sample is organised into three sections, the lateral ones each occupied by three drawers, and the central one with two drawers. One of small size in the lower area and an upper one with a rounded structure in the upper part, which is decorated with a chiselled bone frontal. Each of these rectangular boxes combines an inner tortoiseshell veneer, outlined in chiselled bone with classical vegetal motifs, and an outer moulding of ebonised wood. The central temple is the richest element, and is decorated with a mock-architecture made from incised and cut-out plates of bone. The sides and top of the desk continue with this geometric design based on incised bone, which maintains total coherence within the piece. It also has a 19th-century lyre-legged table with curved iron legs. The same geometric design in bone is repeated on the tabletop as on the sides and top of the desk.

It has a rectangular top, supported by four rectangular section legs, with drawers at the front. An early 19th century George III period mahogany knee-hole desk - the reeded edge top above recessed fielded panel door enclosing a shelf flanked to the left by five small graduated drawers with Anglesey kite-shaped escutcheons and cast-brass swan-neck handles and four further, larger graduated drawers to the right, raised on bracket feet, with two large polished brass side carrying handles (99.5cm wide x 50.5cm deep x 71cm high) Condition Report: The two side panels look OK but the middle panel looks as though it has been replaced at some stage but not 'out of place'. The top evidently has a dark oval mark in the centre and the outer edges are much lighter/sun bleached. Some scratching, old water marks and a historic split in from the left-hand side (10cm from the back). Looking from the front the brass carrying handle has faded significantly and the Auctioneer's opinion is in need of a re-polish. The left hand side is slightly darker. There is a reeded edge top with a small vertical split but otherwise OK. Fading also evident on the front and on the left-hand bank of four smaller drawers the base drawer has a full width crack across the middle behind the handle. The central cupboard door opens to reveal a central shelf. The item is raised on bracket feet which look OK minus a few scuffs and knocks etc. commensurate with age. Auctioneer's opinion is that the piece does require work as outlined. Condition commensurate with age and usage.
