Of Literary interest - A George III silver desk stand by Henry Chawner, London 1789, the outsized navette formed stand with reeded edge ending in two scrolled handles, all raised on four reeded and everted foliate decorated feet, the frame to the centre containing four glass bottles of two sizes flanking a central taper holder supported above a small conical pounce pot, the base inscribed to one side 'William Cowper to William Hayley' and on the other 'Hayley to Rose - The Tribute of Joyous Gratitude and Eloquent Friendship', 38cm diameter, 19.5cm high, The glass and silver elements are largely inseparable hence no weight given Provenance: William Cowper, (1731-1800) was born in Great Berkhamstead, later living in Norfolk. He was one of the most widely read English poets of his day, though plagued by mental illness William Hayley (1745-1820) was born in Chichester, Sussex.
