An 18th Century red lacquered and gilt chinoiserie decorated desk, the shaped top with figural decoration over a central shaped long drawer, above a kneehole, flanked by two pedestals of three shaped drawers, all with circular Oriental style brass handles to turned squat feet, 81 cm x 75 cm CONDITION REPORTS Overall with quite heavy wear and scuffs. Various splitting and movement to carcass which has caused separating at joins and cracking and losses to lacquer work. Vertical split from top to bottom on one side. Horizontal split across top drawer. Numerous chips and losses to edges and splits and cracks throughout. Some of the surface is quite rough and appears that the original surface/veneers may be lacking and have been re-painted over. The smaller handles to side drawers appear to be later than the central escutcheon, and there are some marks inside the drawers which may indicate earlier handles. The red laquer and decoration may possibly be later although still of some age, as there appears to be some black lacquer or darker layer beneath. There are also some newer replacement sections of wood lower edge of rear of desk which are not tongue and grooved and are red lacquered to their edges but do not have the darker / black lacquer base beneath the red. Various bubbling and losses to decoration. Red laquer is quite thick and irregular in places, and with darker areas and chipped off areas with black / earlier / base lacquer showing through. Lacquer has areas of bubbling, dirt and discolouration, cracking and losses. The back boards to rear are loose, and appear to be later replacements. Some old worm holes, which appear to have been lacquered over and / or filled with dirt and dust over the years. Overall appears to be a good period piece, with some old alterations and repairs, and possibly some old re-laquering.

Lot 416

A Victorian mahogany Davenport in the manner of Gillows, the pierced brass three quarter gallery top over a stationery compartment and sloping writing surface with tooled leather insert sliding forward over a tooled leather covered slide and four side drawers with turned knob handles opposite four dummy drawers, raised on turned feet to brass caps and castors, 50.5 cm wide CONDITION REPORTS In used condition with general knocks, bumps, surface scratches and minor nibbles to veneers on edges. Quite dirty. Pen holder section has one ink pot missing. Desk slope - leather insert appears to be a modern replacement and there are numerous blobs of staining to the leather work and across veneer of slope of the desk. If you push the top back as far as it can go the lower section of the desk has at least two or three areas of veneer missing. Two sides - leather work probably a replacement and has some staining. Otherwise appears to be in sound condition and would benefit from some general sympathetic restoration.
