A mid-19th century figured walnut rise and fall piano-topped davenport desk; the shaped fall opening to reveal two half-width drawers and pull-out gilt-tooled leather writing surface further over four full-width drawers and four dummy drawers opposing, on bun-style feet with recessed front castors (58cm wide x 96cm high including three-quarter pierced brass gallery)The item is entered as part of an estate clearance and as such is sold as seen and has no reserve price: the rise and fall mechanism unfortunately does not work, the veneers within the three-quarter pierced gilded brass gallery are slightly bubbled towards the middle and have sustained water damage or fading; the piano fall has also sustained water damage where the veneers have discoloured; there are general scuffs and knocks to the lower edge near the feet and lower moulding with a 1 1/2 inch square piece of veneer away towards the end of the moulding near the back foot; the lower of the four true drawers has sustained some damage to the left-hand handle and there are pieces away around the turned section where it meets the drawer and some discolouration; the piece is generally is dusty and dirty and would benefit from a good wax polish; the front is generally good, the back top has some water damage or fading, the piano top is quite nicely figured with marquetry and lifts up as it should and is straight to reveal two interior half-width drawers and a leathered writing surface which looks original with scratches and ink marks, lifting up on a lectern, some ink staining to the pen department, hinges look good, lock looks good, the carving is as it should be but would benefit from a wax polish, some of the castors have been replaced to the underside; overall a good honest piece but in need of some restoration and cleaning/polishing
