Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. some old repairs and some losses. handles are possibly original, they are in period taste and there are no alternate handle holes or marks from alternate handles. If the current handles are replacements then the originals most have been placed in the same positions. A number of the drawer locks are later replacements, some later 18th century in date, others late 19th/ 20th century. Some later blocks and/ or fillets of timber are present adjacent to locks to compensate for previous placement of locks or for adjacent repairs. Some fading overall. The 'drop in' sections of timber that cover the inset divisions for inkwells etc to the top are present and are likely original, with remnants of a leather/ textile pull to each remaining. Various stains to the drawer linings and to the timber beneath the ratchet adjustable surfaces. The ratchet arms are possibly replacements but hinges to each have been replaced supporting them being of significant age or original. They are very clean in appearance. The hinges of the adjustabel panels themselves are likely replacements and there are alternate 'pin holes' from what were likely the originals. The current hinges are neatly placed. The leather is possibly a replacement and may have been later re-stained black. (NT 850055).The form of the base of this table relates to tables supplied by Edward Holmes Baldock, one of which was produced for The Duke of Buccleuch in 1840, and was sold by The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry, removed from Dalkeith Palace, Christie's, London, 1 April 1971, lot 43. It is now at Temple Newsam House, Leeds (C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, vol. II, London, 1978, no. 395).The marquetry decoration featured on this table is executed in the Dutch fashion first adopted in the 1820's by the Tottenham Court Road 'Cabinet inlayer and Buhl manufacturer' Robert Blake. The firm, which had been trading in the early 1840's as Blake, Geo. & Brothers, inlayers, etc' in Tottenham Court Road and Mount Street, Mayfair were renamed George Blake & Co. in the late 1840's (C. Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p.18; and M.P. Levy, Furniture History Society Newsletter, no. 158, May 2005). A marquetry desk at Goodwood House displaying similar floral marquetry, labelled 'Messrs Blake's' [sic] features similar floral marquetry (see M. Levy, 'E.H.Baldock and the Blake Family: Further Evidence', Furniture History, Newsletter No. 158, May 2005, p.1).A related marquetry centre table was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 23 November 2006, lot 123 (£28,000). A further related example was sold Christie's London, Important English Furniture, 7th June 2007, Lot 157 (£27,600). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions, old chips and splits commensurate with age and use. some minor chips of loss. One old closed split visible to the side edge of the top runs in a line into the adjacent border. There is a corresponding split to the underside of the top. It does not appear that this split will open any further unless adversely affected and has remained closed where it appears to the top for a considerable period. Natural sun fading to colour overall. Some additional darks marks and scratches to the top. The colour overall may be darkened/ enriched by being tended to by an experienced restorer polisher. One small fragmentary piece of veneer detached but present and attached to the table What appear to be natural splits in the surface of timber of the top have been filled with very thin fillets of timber (see images) Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition.
