A VICTORIAN ENGRAVED GILT-BRASS PART DESK TIMEPIECEBy Thomas Cole, London, No. 1298, for Hunt & Roskell, London, circa 1870The 2 3/4in circular engraved silvered dial, inscribed for Hunt & Roskell and punch numbered, the half-plate movement signed THOs COLE LONDON, with lever escapement and plain three-armed balance, in an engraved cup case, with removable central terminal for winding and hand setting(Lacking its stand)8cm diam.This timepiece formed part of an inkwell designed by Cole, its base now lost. See John B. Hawkins, Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking, Sydney 1975.The timepiece is in unrestored condition and lacks its stand and glass. The dial is tarnished and the movement is overwound and does not function.The balance wheel does spin when the clock is turned.

AN ITALIAN PIETA DURA PANEL MOUNTED EBONISED MUSIC BOX (QTY)Late 19th Century Fitted with a 2.1/2 in brass cylinder, stamped 29287, winding key, 17cm wide; Together with a group of desk accessories, including two painted oak mounted Cambridge University coats-of-arms, one for Girton College, 20cm and 17cm high, a glass and brass mounted inkwell, a magnifying glass, blade sharpening stone, a burr and tulip wood inlaid photograph frame, another gilt-tooled leather example by Jarrolds, a Tiger’s Eye agate inset marble paperweight, and a quantity of stone samplesProvenance: The Waterhouse Collection Please see the following story for further details: Autumn at Bellmans | The Waterhouse Family CollectionThe Tiger’s eye agate inlaid marble paper weight, with paper label to reverse inscribed ‘Said to be a sample for fireplace at Yattendon Court’. Yattendon Court, Berkshire was purchased by Alfred Waterhouse RA in 1876 and extended by the architect. It was later completely pulled down in 1925. Condition report: Please see extra images of the top of the small pietra dura music box. There is a key. The music mechanism does work but there is no guarantee of it’s working order and a full clean and service is recommended by a specialist. The box with a few minor scuffs and small dents commensurate with wear and use. The paper weight with a few small nicks to the edges an corners. The glass well separates from base. Wear and tarnishing.The other pieces with inevitable scuffs, scratches, dents, small chips and marks commensurate with wear, use and age.
