A Gordon Russell rosewood and elm desk, c.1937, the rectangular top over five drawers with chrome 'Birmabright' handles, the side united with a chrome stretcher, with copper label 'The Russell Workshops Ltd., Broadway, Worcestershire', 152cm wide 72cm deep 73cm high, and a pair of elbow chairs, with pink herringbone backs and seat, one chair arm severely damaged (3) This lot is sold with Gordon Russell literature and letters. An account of the original purchase of this desk from the Gordon Russell shop in London, and its subsequent use as a 'shelter' in the blitz, features in the book by the vendor's father, Stowers Johnson - 'Collector's World', 1989, pp. 77-78. CONDITION REPORT: Desk - staining to the top, water marks, some scuffing to the edges. Some knocks to drawer fronts on the right. Crome ok. Chairs - one chair arm severely damaged.
