A late 20th Century Georgian style elm pedestal desk by Ian Laval, having inlaid burr walnut spandrels, cockbeaded drawers and swan-neck brass handles, 127 x 63 x 79 cm[Ian Lavel, began making furniture in Wigton, near Carlisle in the early 1970s. For nearly 30 years he has been working in British Columbia, Canada. He works alone using traditional techniques and celebrates the use of local timbers, doing his own milling including hand sawn veneers. This piece was made in 1990 from a fallen tree in the vendor's garden in Cumwhinton, Carlisle. His designs are frequently based on traditional forms, with a clean modern aesthetic.]
§ John Grenville (British 1918-2004) Candle Desk Stand, 1960 hallmarked for London, silverDimensions:23.3cm high, 22.5cm wide (9 1/4in high, 8 8/9in wide)Provenance:Grenville originally studied fine art at Farnham (1938-40), before studying silversmithing at the Central School of Arts & Crafts (1945-7) after the war. Following on from this he ran a workshop in London, before moving to Broxford in Suffolk in 1966, and opening a shop in Clare. In the 1967 Crafts Journal it stated that 'John Grenville is one of the few craftsmen whose work is not subsidised by teaching'.
