The cover decorated in niello depicting a soldier on horseback galloping, the rear with shaped cartouche and monogram BC within a hatched border. Bearing 84 zlotnik stamp, masters mark Andre Kovalsky and date 1879, Moscow, with makers stamp `A.M`. 9cm width, approx 3.6 ozs.

AN ENGLISH GOLD-MOUNTED AND PRESSED TORTOISESHELL SNUFF BOX of ripple moulded circular form with fluted sides, the thumbpiece chased with a shell, 7cm diameter, mid 18th c On the inside of the box small strain crack and on the opposite side, tiny triangular piece of tortoiseshell lacking near the hinge but this is very minor and is not noticeable when the lid is closed. Externally the moulded decoration slightly worn but not split, chipped or repaired

A FINE SILVER- MOUNTED SOUTH GERMAN CARVED STAGHORN SNUFF MULL the front and lid carved in cameo with a hunting scene or hound in a hilly landscape, the reverse applied with an engraved silver shield shaped tablet, 14cm h, unmarked, c1847 The engraved inscription reads: SIR JOHN M MACKENZIE BART. TO ANDREW YOUNG INVERSHIN 1847. Provenance: A name held in considerable esteem by 19th c anglers, Andrew Young of Invershin (d 1865) to whom the box was presented, was for many years Tracksman and Manager of the Duke of Sutherland`s celebrated salmon fishery at Invershin, Sutherlandshire. An expert on the Salmon, he wrote, or contributed to several early books on the subject, including The Book of the Salmon (1850) and The Angler and Tourists` Guide ....(1857) Of fine quality and in fine condition
