A William IV silver snuff box, maker Edward Smith Birmingham 1836 of rectangular form, gilded interior, with raised and engraved edge, engine turned decoration to the sides and under, it has a high relief image to the hinged lid of ' Mazeppa ' on a low relief background, ( image taken from the famous Horace Vernet painting ' Mazeppa and the Wolves 1826') depicting Mazeppa tied to a bolting Horse, but surviving the peculiar death sentence (a poem by Lord Byron) and going on to be a Ukrainian leader who fought the Russians, proving the strength of the Ukrainian who will not die ! 8cm wide 162 gms, 5.22 ozs
