Carnegie) with the engineer and other officers of the Company made the first experimental trip along the whole line on Saturday the 29th ult. The train, which consisted of only two waggons loaded with yarns, and two with workmen, employed upon the railway, was hauled by an elegant and powerful engine called the Victoria, built at the Dundee foundry. The experiment proved exceedingly satisfactory, both as respected the finished state of the way and the construction of the engine. The road is to be immediately opened for the conveyance of both goods and passengers; and it being now2 joined to the Arbroath and Dundee Railway at the harbour of Arbroath, gives a continuing line of Railway of 29 miles, connecting the manufacturing towns of Dundee, Arbroath and Forfar, by that most perfect of all means of conveyance. As it passes near to Brechin, this city and surrounding country will also participate in the benefits of this improved means of intercourse with the three towns above mentioned." A comment from the Cumberland Pacquet of January 22nd 1839 also notes: "The Arbroath and Forfar railway was opened to the public on Thursday. The first train, drawn by the Victoria engine, left Arbroath at half-past eight in the morning, carrying the directors and a large number of passengers. Great interest was excited among the spectators along the line as well as at Forfar, where there was a general turn-out. The trip was made in gallant style. The return of the engine to Arbroath at half-past eleven, was witnessed by hundreds of persons, who assembled at various points where a view of the railway could be obtained." The engines on this line, built by Stirling & Co. of Dundee, numbered only three and were called the Victoria, the Britannia and the Caledonia: they all had outside cylinders and six wheels (driving wheels of five feet in diameter & carrying wheels of three feet six inches diameter). The engine portrayed on the cover of the box has to be a representation of one of the aforementioned three engines & very likely the Victoria, allowing for a little artistic licence.
