A bright and memorable example of late Russian Art Nouveau, a silver cloisonne enamels snuff box - from the 6th Moscow artel. The snuff box has a discreet, octagonal shape and carries an impressive ensemble of geometric belts, floral and natural decorations. On the hinged lid there is a title picture of a fairy-tale flower-tree with fruits and berries that grew on the edge of an epic forest. In the corners it is surrounded by an ambivalent motif of a green wave from a dove-gray field, which, in the upper corners, personifies rainy skies and clouds, and in the lower register - the biosphere of lake and meadow grasses. The spiral pyramids of the central axis, above and below, bear the imprints of the elements of air and fertile earth. The sides of the body, in addition to the geometric belt of rhombuses and spirals, are decorated with alternating fields of fabulous flowering and water origin, the beginning and half a day of life. Corner cuts form dynamic, diagonal compositions on a light background. On the base of the snuff box there are Moscow hallmarks of 84 silver samples from 1908-1917, and mark 6 of the Moscow jewelry artel. Attributed to Jean Georges Remond and Company, circa 1810. Gold octagonal snuffbox with decorative belts, guilloche and painted enamel: Belisarius begging, on a hinged lid. The installed octagonal enamel plate is based on the 1781 painting of the same name by Jacques-Louis David. It depicts the beggar Flavius Belisarius (505–565), commander of the Eastern Roman Empire. Illustrates the sad legend about the old age of the famous commander. At the end of his life, he fell out of favor with the emperor, and ended his life as a blind beggar, having experienced the transience of fame and human ingratitude. Belisariuss hands represent despair and a plea for mercy. The guide boy hands over the heros helmet, where the alms are placed by a woman in ancient clothes, shocked by the unexpected meeting with the former arbiter of destinies. Enamel miniature and deep cobalt blue guilloche enamel with black leaf silhouettes, decorated with a floral frame, a belt with garlands and stylized rams heads. On the reverse side it is decorated with an empire belt of rising suns and spikelets. The side sections are gracefully decorated with motifs of double palmettes. A similar gold enamel box is part of the Khalili collection, which includes several works by Jean-Georges Remond. Although the miniature is not signed, it is quite obvious that it is the work of Jean-Abraham Lissignol. Lissignols work is characterized by extremely fine brush strokes, executed with a single hair, combined with a pointillistic technique, which can often be found on the snuff boxes of Jean Georges Remont. A related Yixing lotus brush washer, also by Chen Mingyuan, Kangxi, is illustrated by P.Moss, The Literati Mode: Chinese Scholar Paintings, Calligraphy and Desk Objects, London, 1986, p.228, no.104.Chen Mingyuan stands out as a significant figure in the rich legacy of Yixing stoneware, despite the scarcity of historical documentation about his life. The specific dates of his birth and passing remain elusive, yet contemporary scholarship generally places Chen within the Kangxi/Yongzheng period (1662-1735), or potentially as early as the Shunzhi/Kangxi era (1644-1722). Chen adopted various artistic names, including Hefeng, Hecun, Shixia shanren, and Huyin. His exceptional talent and masterful craftsmanship are lauded in traditional assessments of Yixing pottery. In A Pictorial Study of Yangxian Pottery Teapots (Yangxian shahu tu kao) by Li Jingkang and Zhang Hong (1937:12), Chen's remarkable skills in crafting teapots and scholar's objects are likened to those of Xu Youquan and Shen Ziche, contemporaries who were equally revered alongside the renowned master Shi Dabin. Surviving examples attest to the significant interest in producing objects for the scholar's studio at the end of the Ming dynasty. In this context, Chen Mingyuan emerges as a pivotal figure, arguably the foremost successor and innovator in advancing this artistic tradition during the early Qing period. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
