A 19th century papier mache oval snuff box, the black ground painted with scrolling acanthus leaves framing a central medallion with classical urn, surmounted by white flowers, together with a Chinese lacquered box of similar date decorated with three figures to the fore, trees and pagodas behind, largest 5.5 by 7.5 by 3cm. Two items of 'trench art': a brass and copper snuff box modelled as a British army cap with general service badge, and an inkwell formed from the nose cap of a German shell set on a turned oak base with silver plaque engraved 'FRANCE 1916' (hallmark for Chester 1917); together with the nose cap of a German shell, with timer graduations. [3] nb. shell types HZ 04 and HZ 05.
A Staffordshire enamel snuff box, c.1780, the rectangular form painted with a portrait of a lady raising a shell to her hair, possibly the actress Lavinia Fenton, the sides painted with flower sprays reserved on a white ground with gilt trelliswork, 6.8cm. The portrait bears a marked resemblance to that of Lavinia Fenton, later Duchess of Bolton, attributed to George Knapton. She was most famous for her role as Polly Peachum in The Beggar's Opera.
A finely painted silver mounted porcelain table top snuff box, 18th century, probably by Meissen, of ovoid form, sides painted with figural groups of semi-clad maidens in the Greco style and cherubs within classical garden, base painted with a bird within fruiting tree, convex lid painted with goddess holding staff of Caduceus to one hand and harp to the other, with cherub and maidens to fore, the lid interior finely painted portrait of an lady of high rank wearing yellow dress, blue shawl and jewellery, silver mount with applied floral thumb grip and engraved detail. height 4 cm x width 8 cm x depth 6 cm.
