CHURCHILL WINSTON S.: (1874-1965) British Prime Minister 1940-45, 1951-55. Nobel Prize winner for Literature, 1953. T.L.S., with his initial W, and with holograph subscription, one page, 8vo, Hyde Park Gate, London, 5th December 1959, to [Norman] Brook. Churchill announces 'I have been admiring the beautiful and original silver box which you gave me for my Birthday' and thanks his correspondent for their kind thought. Churchill further adds a holograph sentence at the conclusion, 'I treasure it greatly'. Annotated in pencil in an unidentified hand at the foot of the page indicating that the gift was a snuff box made by the Birmingham silversmiths Thropp & Taylor in 1810. VG £800-1000 Norman Brook (1902-1967) 1st Baron Normanbrook. British Civil Servant who served as Cabinet Secretary 1947-62 and head of the Home Civil Service 1956-62. Brook was one of the twelve pallbearers at Churchill's funeral in 1965.
