A tortoiseshell snuff box and cover, 19th century, of circular form, the cover inset with a watercolour on ivory portrait miniature depicting a classical maiden set within a gold-coloured metal border, 7cm diameterPlease note this lot is offered for sale in accordance with the Ivory Act 2018, Trevanion Auctioneers & Valuers LLP have applied for an exemption licence for the ivory in this lot Ref: EC91DT7F CONDITION REPORT:The piece shows age related wear across all surfaces, including small scuffs and fine surface scratching. The cover shows losses to the turned edge of the upper rim, a chip to the lower rim, extensive scuffing and scratching to the underside, and fine scratching to the metal band. The portrait miniature shows craquelure to the blue background on the left hand side. On the right side, the blue appears to have adhered to the underside of the glass and lifted as a result. This may be evidence of previous failed restoration, however examination under UV suggests the blue is the original paint. The body of the box shows a vertical hairline crack (possibly a seam) to the side wall, but this does not appear to extend all the way through the wall. The base shows some age related cracking to the exterior, but again this does not appear to extend through to the interior base.

G.F. LYON -- 3½in. (9cm.) diameter; together with an engraving of Captain Sir Roger Curtis saving Spanish sailors at Gibraltar, 13th of September, 1782, from Raymond's History of England, PL. -- 10½ x 6½in (27 x 16.5cm.) framed and glazed(2)The Arctic Expedition of 1819-20 was only the second such voyage to be officially sponsored by the British government and was yet another attempt to find the supposed North West Passage. Hecla (Lieutenant William Parry) and Griper (Lieutenant Matthew Liddon) left England in May 1819 and, by September, had reached Melville Sound where they found the way forward blocked by ice. Wintering off Melville Island, the two vessels were finally able to get free of the ice the following June even though, by August 1820, it was clear that no further progress could be made due to yet more ice in the McClure Strait. A George III rectangular silver-gilt snuff box, London 1802, of oval section, cast and chased with lattice and flowerhead panels, inscribed to interior 'H.P. 13th Oct.1845', crested, 8.5cm wide approximately 94gThe marks are on the front edge of the hinged cover and the bottoms of the marks are 'cut off' the maker is not clearly struck. The silver gilt is slightly discoloured and would perhaps need a very careful clean. Overall condition good, no repairs, dents or splits.

Crack around top edge of cover to one side. Box has various cracks and a split, mainly to the front sides. The inner mounts and hinge are gold plated.
