A Charles II silver mounted sea bean snuff boxSimon Romney, London circa 1680 A sea bean mounted with hand-cut silver strapwork, the edges shaped and naively engraved, the silver cover hinged and secured via a hook and vertical ring, inscribed 'IE'97', together with a silver mounted carved mother-of-pearl snuff box, possibly Dutch early 19th century, unmarked, boat shaped, a mother-of-pearl body featuring Neptune with his trident and a nude woman to the hinged cover, opened by a shell button to reveal a lead lined interior, an internal silver disc inscribed 'Sahagun Dec' 21 1808', the exterior with applied silver scrolling mounts, the sides carved with cherubs playing horns with wave-like scrolls, a silver keel beneath. (2)Footnotes:Property of a private collector.The interior of the mother-of-pearl snuff box cites the following - The Battle of Sahagún, 21 December 1808. This refers to a cavalry clash at Sahagún, Spain, in which the British 15th Light Dragoons (Hussars) defeated two regiments of French cavalry during the Corunna Campaign of the Peninsular War. Losses to one of the French regiments were so heavy that it was subsequently disbanded. The action marked the final phase of the British army's advance into the interior of Spain, before they began their harrowing retreat to the coast and ultimate evacuation by sea.
