A rare early 19th century hallmarked silver oval two division snuff box inscribed to the sides "The Officers of the 49th Regiment to Colonel Yates Ballinaslce, 12th Feb 1821", the cover with bright cut engraved border, the lids inscribed "19th and 49th", maker IP, date letter obscured, 10 x 4.5cm. Formerly the property of General Sir Miles Dempsey.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, British Historical Medals, The Loss of the East Indiaman Kent, Silver Medal, 1825, by Thomas Halliday, seascape with the Kent burning vigorously, a passanger descends into a skiff, to the fore the brig Cambria, 1 MARCH 1825, rev names of the towns that helped the survivors around legend, THE DESTRUCTION OF THE KENT EAST INDIAMAN, IN THE BAY OF BISCAY …, engraved naming on edge, “EDWARD CONNELY CHIEF MATE”, 48mm (BHM 1250; Eimer 1178; MH 578). Extremely fine with a few minor scuffs. For further reading see Fearon, D, “The Melancholy Loss of the Kent, East Indiaman – 1825: An Account of the Medal struck to Commemorate the Event”, OMRS, Winter 1988, pp.244-250. Connely’s medal was not amongst those listed in the article and has not been noted by the writer in the intervening years. A presentation snuff box to Edward Connolly (sic) with a depiction of the Loss of the Kent is in the museum of the East Surrey Regiment.
An early Victorian presentation silver Castle-top snuff box, Kenilworth, by Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham 1837, rectangular form, the hinged cover with a relief of Kenilworth Castle from the Elizabethan gardens, the interior cover inscribed 'T. Beaumont Walpole Esq. from John Fisher Esq. of Cossington, Leicestershire, Sept 26th 1849', also engraved with two crests, the base with lattice decoration and initialled, length 6.2cm, approx. weight 1.4oz

John of Jerusalem for the year 1834, by his brother Jurymen as a token of their esteem and approbation, his impartial conduct while presiding over their labours', length 8cm, approx. weight 4oz
