EARLY VICTORIAN SILVER SNUFF BOX maker James Nasmyth, Edinburgh, date letter rubbed, the case with cartouche engraved 'Presented to Mr Walter Linn by the Directors of the Glasgow & Garnkirk Railway 1841 with thanks (illegible)', with engine turned base, parcel gilt interior, approximately 130g, 8cm wide
Two 18thC Dutch enamel boxes, one of bombe form painted with panels of flowers, fishermen to the lid, 11cm long, the other a snuff box with floral fluted sides, pastoral scene to the lid, 5.5cm long, together with a Delft ware serpentine box and cover painted with a fishing scene to the lid, 9cm x 8cm x 5.5cm.
Tub containing assorted items to include: dice box; enamel oval patch box; gaming wheel and table snuff box, hand painted with rural scenes marked: Lille, 1767 to base.(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Enamel box - very poor condition, lid badly cracked/damaged, badly repaired.Gaming wheel - damage near number 1 area. Splits in places.Patch box - Wear as expected but no obvious damage.Dice shaker - Wear as expected but no obvious damage.
An Edwardian silver oblong snuff box by John Edward Wilmot, Birmingham, 1902, engraved to cover and base with foliate scrolls, cover centred by vacant circular reserve, plain sides, 5.7 cm. long; a Victorian scallop form purse with turquoise silk concertina lining, by Jacob Otto Schuler, London, 1882; a Continental box in the form of a tricorn hat with English import marks for London, 1895, chased with flowers, cover with two playful putti; a French silver circular pill box chased with rocaille decoration on hammered ground, gilt interior, circa 1900; and a German silver oval pill box, Hanau, circa 1900, cover chased with courting couple and dog watching over a herd of cows in rural setting, weighable silver (without purse) 110 gm. (5).All in good condition.
A late Victorian silver snuff box by Colen Hewer Cheshire, Birmingham, 1892, of shaped rectangular form with rounded ends, base engraved with profuse scrolling floral decoration and conforming thumbpiece, cover engraved with decorative "C" scrolls around vacant reserve, sides with undulating foliate panels, gilt interior, 8 cm. long, wt. 77 gm.Good condition.
A group of silver comprising:- an unmarked (tests silver) oval snuff box with ribbed sides and plain cover and base; an Edwardian silver child's rattle and whistle with mother-of-pearl teething stick, Sheffield, 1905, embossed with flowrs and scrolls; a pair of William IV silver Fiddle pattern sugar tongs by Phillip Phillips, London, 1833, initialled "MF"; and a silver paper knife applied with enamel coat of arms, Birmingham, 1937, gross weight without rattle 177 gm. (4).All in good condition.
AN EARLY VICTORIAN RECTANGULAR SNUFF BOX the cover inset with a carved ivory panel, the sides & base with flowers, fruit & scrollwork in low relief, gilt interior, inscribed inside the cover "From Chas. Edmd. Rumbold Esq., M.P 7th August 1838", unmarked c.1830; 3" (7.5 cms) long; 4.4 oz gross *Charles Edmund Rumbold was M.P. for Greath Yarmouth 1813-34, 1837-47 and 1848-57.
A MIXED LOT:- An early 18th century mounted tortoiseshell snuff box with an inlaid pique-work scene on the cover entitled "IE-QUITE TOUT-POUR-VOUS", c.1720 (A/F), a treen shoe snuff box and a folding fruit knife with mother of pearl sides, Sheffield 1893 (fitted case); the shoe 4.25" (11 cms) long (3)
MARITIME INTEREST:- A 19th century circular turned oak snuff box & cover, inset with copper & inscribed "Made from the wreck of the Betsy Cains which brought King William to England 1688" and "A.Reed Esq. Mayor 1827"; 3.6" (9.2 cms) diameter *After 1689 the ship, which was then called Princess Mary, was sold, renamed and employed in the coal trade until 1827. She was then wrecked on Tynemouth Bar and her timbers were salvaged.
