From a local tobacconist shop (C. Sealey) that closed in the early 1990s, shop and display merchandise dating from the turn of the 20th Century. A box containing price tags, spill makers in their original packs, flip-open cigarette dustbin/ashtrays (in original packs), Meerschaum pipes in original display box, miscellaneous pipes, flints in original packets, tins etcs and Dutch Tobacco display jar complete with contents in original trade pack together with a string of snuff bags. A Silver-Mounted Blue Aventurine Glass Snuff-Box, Apparently Unmarked, Circa 1780, cartouche shaped and with fluted sides, the hinged cover set with a blue aventurine glass panel, simulating lapis lazuli, 7cm wide Aventurine, or goldstone, glass was originally invented in Italy in the 17th century and has been used in place of hardstones throughout the 18th and into the 19th century. Other examples of its use to simulate lapis lazuli include on another snuff-box, with marks for London, 1743 (Bonhams, London, 6 October 2010, lot 259) and on a necessaire (offered Christie's, Amsterdam 22 June 2011, lot 474).
A Swiss Gold and Enamel Snuff-Box, Apparently Unmarked, Circa 1820, Possibly for the Turkish Market, oval, the base and hinged cover scalloped and enamelled en grisaille with flowers on a black ground, the sides and inside of the cover similarly decorated, 8cm wide, gross weight 3oz 3dwt Other similar examples to the present snuff-box are known, including one of similar shape and also centrally enamelled with an array of flowers painted en grisaille which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (17.190.1143). That example however has polychrome flowers painted on the rays and is further painted with the Tughra of Sultan Mahmud II. An example of very similar form and with similar enamel was sold Sotheby's, New York, 19 October 2017, lot 84.
An unusual early 20th century novelty silver snuff-box in the form of an American football, with hinged cover, gilt-washed interior, and edged detail, maker Henry Williamson Ltd, Birmingham 1905, with stamped RD number 469977 verso, 9 x 6cmCondition: Approx 5x5mm surface dent to underside, towards top left hand corner. Large dent at left hand front edge, with two further conforming dents further on. Mid-sized dent to back right hand edge. Further smaller dents particularly to outer edges. General handling wear, light surface scratches and tarnishing throughout. Hinged mechanism good. Cover sits a little proud at front edge.
An Arts & Crafts silver snuff-box in the form of a Gothic Revival chest, applied strapwork decorated, the hinged cover with polished hardstone inset central cabochon, maker C. & Co, Birmingham 1904, 8 x 4.8 x 2.9cmCondition: Doesn’t sit entirely flat, small wobble when handled. Hinged mechanism good. Fold to top right hand front corner of cover resulting in small imbalance to front edge of cover. General handling wear and tarnishing throughout. A few small exterior surface scratches. Gilt interior now well worn.
