A late 18th Century boat shaped coquilla nut Snuff Box, (possibly French Napoleonic War period), the hinged lid extremely finely carved with a relief depiction of Cupid sharpening his arrow upon a foot operated stone blade sharpener, the main body very finely carved with swags and terminating at each end with differing mythical beast masks, the underside of the piece is also very finely carved with an oval band of leaves, the Snuff Box of excellent colour and patination, 8cm wide CONDITION REPORT: Very good general overall original condition with a fine patination, the carving is extremely fine (as evidenced by the images). Being super critical there appears to be a very faint (natural) thin horizontal line from just below cupid's left foot rising to his left arm (hard to see unless you are looking at it under a glass or loop). The only minor thing to point out is that there is an approx. 8mm small crack where the hinge is fixed (right hand section) to the larger boat shaped section below. Otherwise in good order.
