Burke and Hare Interest: A brass mounted bone snuff boxCirca 1829Of tapered oval form, the hinged cover with vacant oval plaque and bifurcated mount, the body with plain brass collar, the base inscribed 'W.Burke Shoemaker West Port Edinr'; together with a notepaper inscribed in black and red ink the following, 'Made and used by William Burke, the notorious murderer who was executed on Edinburgh in 1829.After his apprehension he was taken to the Carlton Jail, he was searched by a Warder and amongst other things which were in his pockets was this box. The Warder gave the box to the late Mr James Cairns of the Inlaid Revenue, he being a Townsman and school-fellow of his. In 1868 Mr Cairns gave the snuff box to Lieut.J.Mackie Instructor of Fortification and Engineering in the late S.Military Academy Edinburgh.
