A 19TH CENTURY RUSSIAN NIELLO SILVER SNUFF BOX the hinged lid engraved with a palace and a rearing horse, the body with chequered patterns and scrollwork, gilt interior bearing silver marks for 84.6.5cm wide 4cm deep 1.5cm highWeighs 66g. This is in good overall condition. Engraving is worn on the top lid. The hinge closes correctly and the box is not warped. The bottom has a shallow dent. Light surface scratches. I accept with pleasure the snuff box, itself a very fine specimen of early eighteenth century English art, and reputed to have belonged to my famous ancestor. I shall always keep the snuff box with other relics of the great Duke, including a casket of his letters sent to me by Princess Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.
