A Nymphenburg oval gilt-metal-mounted snuff box, circa 1770The exterior finely painted in purple monochrome, the cover depicting a seated female figure personifying Saxony, with the crozier and mitre and the Electorial arms of Saxony to one side and wearing the Electoral crown, to her left a standing figure representing Fame holding a tablet inscribed with the titles of Clemens Wenzelaus and military trophies to the rear, the sides with naturalistic flower sprigs, the base painted with two female figures on clouds holding a mirror and censer, respectively, the inside cover superbly painted with a circular portrait panel depicting Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony as Elector of Trier within a gilt foliate cartouche reserved on an olive ground, the mounts chased with a meandering ribbon and flowers, 7.8cm across, impressed shield mark to inside baseFootnotes:Clemens Wenzeslaus of Saxony (1738-1812) was the second son of the Elector Augustus II of Saxony/King Augustus III of Poland and brother of the Electress of Bavaria, Maria Anna Sophie. He was Prince Bishop of Regensburg and Freising between 1763 and 1768 and subsequently Elector and Archbishop of Trier and Prince Bishop of Augsburg.The portrait is after an engraving by Johann Michael Söckler. A George III hallmarked silver snuff box of rounded rectangular form with all-over engraved decoration and with initials to the central cartouche 'SM', London 1817, 7.5 x 4.5 x 2.5cm, approx 2.86ozt/89.1g.Additional InformationTraces of gilt washed interior, maker's mark obscured slightly. Action closes very well and tightly with only a tiny little bit of give. General surface wear, but overall in good order.

A rare and important 17th century Irish silver snuff box of oval form with engraved scroll and crest to the hinged lid revealing a wrought iron coiled spring, the side with tulip decoration and inscribed 'John Browne 1669', with further floral scrolls to the base, 9 x 7.25cm, approx 2.68ozt/83.4g.Footnote: John Browne of Westport, County Mayo, was the quintessential representative of the Catholic 'New Interest'. Importantly, he was called to the Irish Bar in 1669, the year dated on this snuff box and was a self-made man. As one of the greatest beneficiaries of the upheaval caused by the Restoration land settlement between 1666 and 1685 he accrued an enormous estate in Galway and Mayo of more than 155,000 acres as well as properties in counties Sligo, Roscommon, Clare and Dublin; he also married the daughter of the third Viscount Mayo.Additional InformationThis comes from a private collection of Irish silver and art. There are remnants of a single partial mark to the inside centre of the well. There are some signs of old repair, but for a box of this age, there is just light general surface wear throughout.As detailed the box was acquired by an Irish family who collected many things including silver. It is not known where exactly they purchased this box.
