A MINER'S BRASS TOBACCO OR SNUFF BOX of elongated oval form, the lid impressed 'Fred Carr / Hitcher / Roseheyworth / For God Sake / Buy Your Own / 1909', 7.5cm wide. Note (1): Rose Heyworth Colliery, near Abertillery, was sunk in 1872 by the South Wales Colliery Company, and yielded its first coal two years later. In 1896 it employed 1625 men, working four seams, but by 1938 this figure had fallen to 804. The mine was closed in 1985. Note (2): A 'hitcher' was responsible for loading and unloading 'drams' (trucks) and men on and off the cage at pit bottom. He also signalled when the cage was ready to be moved.
