A late 18th century French painted tortoiseshell snuff box, the hinged lid decorated with scenes from the demonstration of 20th June 1792, depicting Louis XVI with an angry mob holding placards, inscribed 'VIVE SANS CULOTTES! A BAS LE VETO!', within a beaded border and the date '20 Juin 1792', with gilt metal rope-twist mounts, the body decorated with battle scenes, the base with war trophies and a scroll titled 'DROIT DE L'HOMME', 8.6cm wide. Leather snuff box with compass set to the cover, note inside reads "This curious old snuff box of leather, with compass in lid and marked GAB 1785 belonged to George Anson Byron Captain Royal Navy (nat 1758 ob 1793) uncle of poet Lord Byron and godson of the famous circumnavigator Lord Anson. The box belonged afterwards to Lord Byron and was sold among other "Bygone Relics" left by Mr R J Cooke partner in the firm of John Murray, Byron's Publisher June 1982" 10cm long
