19th Century circular papier mache snuff box with tortoiseshell lining, painted on the exterior with nude and semi nude classical females with further painting to the side and underside, housed in an original circular gilt decorated papier mache box (slight chips and damages), 8.5cms diameter
A George III silver gilt oblong snuff box by Joseph Wilmore, Birmingham 1810, with overall basket weave decoration, the cover with a reserve engraved with a crest and script initials JP, 7cm (2 3/4in) long, 63g (2.05 oz). The unrecorded crest of an embowed and vested arm with gauntleted hand holding a ewer/pitcher/jug/flagon.

A French silver snuff box of cushioned rectangular form with engine turn and scrolling floral decoration, gilt lined interior, together with another similar of rectangular form engraved with a view of a cathedral to the front, impressed swan marks to first which is also stamped '730', total overall weight 160g approx.
A late 18th century circular snuff or bonbonniere box mounted with a miniature equestrian portrait of Frederick II the Great, probably German, in papier mache painted to simulate tortoiseshell, the oval portrait painted on mother of pearl with a gold bezel, the cover and base mounts in gilt metal, 8.3cm (3 1/4in) diameter. See le Corbeiller, Clare European and American Snuff Boxes 1730-1830, New York 1966, no. 661 for a very similar equestrian portrait of Frederick mounted on an ivory box in the Osterrichische Tabakregie, Vienna.

[Regimental interest] An unusual Scottish silver table snuff box by A. G. Whighton, Edinburgh 1848, French swan import mark, of shaped triangular outline, the cover presentation engraved within a border chased with scrolls, flowers, rocaille work and a shell to the front lobe, a shaped thumb piece, the plain base with a moulded half apron extending at the front, 10cm (4in) wide (6.15 oz), sitting in its original turned and carved hardwood base. Engraved with `Presented to the Brethren by H. M. Drummond Captn. 42nd Royal Highlanders of Megginch Castle Perthshire. As a mark of esteem and respect for a body over whom he presided for nearly two years 27th December 1848`. Henry Maurice Drummond Hay (Drummond) (1814-1896) was the son of Admiral Adam Drummond, KCH, 7th of Megginch and Lady Charlotte Murray. He was later promoted to colonel and was a noted ornithologist.
A George IV silver gilt snuff box, by Alexander James Strachan, London 1827, the hinged cover with cast foliate border containing a rectangular Roman micromosaic panel, unsigned, (71 x 51mm) depicting The Capotoline (or Pliny`s) Doves, 86 x 70 x 24mm, gross weight 8.6oz, together with two daguerrotype photographs depicting a former owner Lieutenant General Thomas Dyneley, CB., RA Condition:The micromosaic panel is complete and intact. There is some wear to the gilt and to the engine turned design particularly on the base. Hinge is good. Full hall marks to the inside base and partial marks to the inner cover
An 18ct gold cage work decorated snuff box, by Alexander J Strachan, London 1808, the cover inset with a micromosaic depicting a Tiger mauling a Bull after a painting by Wenceslaus (Wenzel) Peter (AUSTRIAN, 1745-1829), the rectangular panel initialled NA (possibly N Angelini) 72.5 x 50mm, the back of the box with a smaller oval micromosaic panel depicting a leaping lion, unsigned, 55 x 22mm, overall box size 85 x 62.5 x 30mm, gross weight 378gm Condition:Generally in good condition. Some dirt and staining below the applied decoration to the sides and base. Main micromosaic panel (initialled NA bottom left)has a small blemish midway between the tails of the bull and the tiger (visible in the images). The micromosaic of the lion on base intact but unsigned. Full hallmarks to the inside base of the box with partial marks to the inside cover. Hinge and `bite` good

A GOLD AND HARDSTONE SNUFF BOX the lid inset with an oblong agate plaque in foliate chased border, the box with bombe sides and slightly recessed base, 8cm w, c1843 The engraved inscription reads: Presented to William Shand Esqr by is affectionate Friend K B Osborn MD 1843. Provenance: The recipient thence by descent to the present vendor. This snuff box is of added interest because both donor and recipient owned sugar plantations in the West Indies in the 1820s and 30s. William Shand (1776-1845) of The Burn, Fettercairn Aberdeenshire and Jamaica is thought to have first travelled to the Island in 1791. In addition to his own estate, he managed several other plantations. An unmarked gold snuff box, c1810/20 that he presented to his father in law John Rankin in 1820 on his marriage was sold, Christie`s, 8th December 2011, lot 96. In 1832 he gave evidence to the House of Commons Committee on Slavery (see the Anti Slavery Reporter, volume 5, pp 431-6). By the time of his death he had become insolvent. Dr Kean Brown Osborn (1770-1852 (was a resident of Antiuga in 1820s but was living in London at Antiuga House, Abbey Road, St John`s Wood by 1845. In that year he in recorded as serving on the committee of the Antiuga Railway Company. Osborn was awarded compensation for the enslaved people on two estates on Antiuga (surce: UCL Website, Legacies of British Slave Ownership).++In fine condition, not hitherto offered for sale
