λ A Swiss tortoiseshell musical singing bird box, retailed by 'FINNIGANS, NEW BOND ST. W.' the top with an engraved gilt brass oval hinged lid, revealing a pierced panel and a brightly coloured bird, activated by a lever on the front of the box, inscribed 'TO SARAH FROM Mary + Douglas', the back with a hinged compartment possibly for snuff, with a bird shape key, late 19th / early 20th century, 10cm wide.
An early 19th century German lacquered papier-mâché snuff box by Stobwasser, of circular form, the lid painted with a classical maiden with bared breasts, the interior with the title 'La favorite de Titian', numbered '6398' and signed 'Stobwassers Fabrik in Braunschweig', 9.9cm diameter. An early 19th century German lacquered papier-mâché snuff box by Stobwasser, of circular form, the lid painted with a young Turkish lady baring her breasts, the interior with the title 'Zaide', numbered '5573' and signed 'Stobwassers Fabrik in Braunschweig', 9.9cm diameter. This snuff box relates to the unfinished opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1780. Zaide was set in Turkey and portrays her efforts to save her beloved Gomatz. It was popular at the time for operas to depict the rescue of enslaved Westerners from Muslim courts, since Muslim pirates were preying on Mediterranean shipping, particularly to obtain slaves for various purposes.
A rare early 19th century German lacquered papier-mâché snuff box, of circular form, the lid painted with a portrait of the Duke of Wellington, his face formed with various naked men and women in erotic positions, 10.2cm diameter. A rare mid 19th century lacquered papier-mâché Freemasons' snuff box, of circular form, the lid painted with an eye, ear and padlocked lips alluding to the motto of Freemasonry: Audi, Vide, Tace (Hear, See, Be Silent), 9.8cm diameter. The motto Audi, Vide and Tace relates to one of the symbols of Masonry that is most understood, secrecy. See W. A mid-18th century Rococo boxwood snuff box, carved in relief, the hinged lid with musicians and a lady playing a piano, within scroll and rocaille borders, the front with a king seated flanked by lions with attendants, the back with men playing billiards, the ends with a couple hunting and sitting in a landscape, the interior with remains of foil, possibly French or German, 9.7cm wide.
